Starmaster sneaker, €59, Novesta

Founded in 1939, when shoemaker Jan Antonin Bata opened a factory in the small town of Partizánske in what is now Slovakia, Novesta still produces all its shoes in the country. Each pair has a trademark rubber sole machine-pressed onto the shoe, resulting in the distinctive tyre-mark effect around the edges. Novesta uses natural rubber, 100 per cent cotton and linen for all its shoes, including the Starmaster.
